WHITE READY to UNVEIL a BIG SEASON
at WISCASSET RACEWAY

by Ken Minott

RACEWAY PRESS RELEASE 3/31/08  -  In just few short weeks Wiscasset Raceway will pull back the curtain on the 2008 season and the start of a new era for "Maine's Center of Speed". Owners Doug and Becky White will roll out an ambitious schedule to start their first full season at the helm. While 2007 was a year of uncertainty, speculation and transition, 2008 is bringing a new feeling of excitement and anticipation. Nobody is more excited than Doug White himself. "We're going to make coming to the Center of Speed an event, an event not to be missed. It's all about giving the fans an exciting and fast paced show, getting them home at a decent hour and leaving them feeling like they can't wait for next weekend." In his short time in charge last season and throughout the winter, White and his team have already made several noticeable changes to the facility including fresh paint on the bleachers and buildings, a new logo and several new staff members, and a countless roster of eager sponsors. From the racers point of view, the back stretch wall has been moved back a foot and a half to allow better racing and more pit pads are being added for the growing list of drivers expected each week. Other slight changes have been made in lineup and qualifying procedures which White feels will only enhance the excitement on the track. Probably the biggest incentive for the drivers this year is the money that is on the table for them to win. Weekly purses have gone up and will pay deeper in the field and the season point fund will exceed $80,000 including a nice $10,000 payoff to the 2008 Pro stock track champion. In January White was voted by the media as the "Promoter of the Year" at the Northeast Motorsports Expo. He and his family took control of track from longtime owners David and Sandra St Clair midway through last season, but this year offers the opportunity for White to put his own stamp on the continued success of the track.

The 2008 Wiscasset Raceway schedule will present a program featuring six weekly racing series divisions (Clark Car Crushing Pro stocks; Smith Construction Late Model Sportsman; Unicel Super Streets; Keystone Automotive Strictly Streets; Aable Auto Parts Mini Stocks; and White & Bradstreet Truck Division) to go with appearances by several popular regional touring series. A significant portion of the Pro All Stars Series North schedule will be decided at Wiscasset with four visits including the $30,000 to win the New England Toyota Tundra 250 Sunday August 17th. PASS will also wrap up its season at Wiscasset October 4th and 5th with the championship weekend "Fall Brawl". To go along with the early October event, Wiscasset will host the $1,000 to win 50 lap Pure-Stock Mini Stock Nationals, the $3,000 to win 100 lap Street Stock Nationals, and the $10,000 to win 100 lap Super Street / Sportsman Nationals, putting a big exclamation point on busy season. Qualifying races for these three major events will be scattered throughout the 2008 schedule. Napa Auto Parts will present the return of the Labor Day Weekend Twin 100'a for Late Model Sportsman and Super Streets. Two prominent regional touring series will also make their first ever visits to Wiscasset Raceway in 2008.  Then Saturday night July 28th Wiscasset Ford will help welcome the groundshaking True Value Modified Series to Maine's only high-bank oval. Finally, the Allison Legacy Series will return to Wiscasset after four years away and both the NELCAR Legends and Midcoast Super Minicup Series will also make occasional stops this season.

Memorial Day weekend will be a special time at Wiscasset Raceway as the Coastal 200 continues its holiday tradition by gathering the top LMS drivers from the northeast to shoot for the $10,000 winner's check. Last year young DJ Shaw outdueled Maine racing legend Mike Rowe in one of the most memorable Coastal 200 battles. Doug White has added to the festivities of this big event with the inclusion of "Operation Recognition"; a community initiative to thank military members past and present and their families. "Mark you calendars for Memorial Day weekend" says White. "We're planning a giant celebration and recognition program for our military that day. Our Governor, our Adjutant General, and other military personnel will be there as the Hero's we'll be honoring." As an added "thank you", White has assigned five occasions this summer when the track will honor active duty military members and their families. On these selected dates Wiscasset Raceway will admit, free of charge, all active duty Military, National Guardsmen, and Reservists plus their spouses and children. The only requirement is that they be in uniform and present their military ID at the gate. The first of these five dates will be for the Coastal 200 on Sunday May 25th.

From Weird To Practical, Big Al's Got It

Paula Gibbs

Having trouble finding an NFL eraser shaped like a football?

All ready for your trip to Florida but can't find any folding coat hangers?

How does the idea of a whole package of vacuum cleaner bags for 99 cents sound?

One of the certain signs of spring in midcoast Maine is the re-opening of Big Al's on Route 1 in Wiscasset. The odd lot store is a must at Christmas time for the perfect stocking stuffers, a regular stop for summer tour buses, and a once-a-month stop for locals who want to see what's new.

From the outrageous -- a toilet seat cover embroidered with "This Too Shall Pass" -- to the practical -- paint brushes, coloring books, and combs -- Big Al's has the perfect item for a joke on a co-worker or a great gift for a good friend.

How about a buckwheat pillow for $2.88? A wood carrot fence?

Easter's just around the corner. How about "a musical girl bunny on a horse" or an Easter cake pan?

Tired of the same old white or off-white wall plates (the covers that go over your electrical switches)? No problem -- Big Al's has wall plates with birds, teddy bears, sports stuff, cats, laundry room paraphernalia, tools, a merry go round, Noah's Ark, a pear, an apple, a yellow ducky, doggies, and daisies.

Let's see... the perfect gift for a co-worker? Does he or she play golf? There's a desk business card holder with two golf balls on each end.

Do you have friends or relatives who have trouble managing their pills? Big Al's has a pill keeper, a pill divider, and a pill masher.

Other useful items in the health section include a battery operated back scratcher, a heating pad, a portable urinal, a digital electronic thermometer and a foot bath.

Need something for that teething baby? How about a plastic camcorder-shaped baby teether?

At the end of your rope? Big Al's sells it by the pound. Rope, that is.

In the pest control department there's a limited, but worthwhile choice of two items: a "gopher gasser" for the critter who's chewing up your lawn; and silverfish packs for getting rid of those tiny wriggling things that like to hang out in your basement.

Got a friend who likes to fish? Give him "Boogie Bass, The Amazing and Lifelike Singing and Dancing Fish."

Need a solution to that puddle of water that forms at the end of your downspout? Direct it away from your house with a colorful ceramic "Frog Downspout Catcher."

Want something for the little homemaker? How about "The Frog Can Crusher," a space saving can compactor (shaped, of course like a green frog).

A gift for a fat-cat friend who has everything? How about a cowhide design trimline phone? No? How about a bigger-than-average phone that has little spaces beside each button where you can insert a picture of your favorite person or dog?

Big Al's devotes an entire aisle to candles: big ones, fat ones, curly ones; some with triple wicks, some that float, some shaped like row- boats; and every possible color and design you can imagine, including leopard skin.

And then, of course there's picture frames, designed with every imaginable theme -- lighthouses, hearts, dogs, moose, baseball, soccer, sailboats

If you know someone who's getting married, there's a whole counter full of nifty little wedding stuff: plastic bride and groom cake top decorations, packages of 24 bottles of wedding bubbles, bouquet holders, miniature rose vases, lighted bridal garlands, drawstring sachets, invitations, glass slipper favors, wedding frames, and place cards.

"Save time and tears," says the packaging on a white plastic microwave onion cooker. "Onions cook up soft and tender and juicy, just like oven baked, but in 1/4 of the time."

Best not delay, if you see something that catches your eye. Interspersed throughout the merchandise are signs that say, "If you like it, buy it now. We may never have it again."

DAVE LIND RACING OFFERS FREE TIRES FOR COASTAL 200 AT WISCASSET

As the finishing touches are put together for the 2008 season at Wiscasset Raceway, Dave Lind Racing of Norfolk, MA has stepped up to help two lucky race teams in one of the track's premier events. Memorial Day weekend will mark the return of the $10,000 to win Coastal 200 to the "Center of Speed" and Dave Lind Racing has agreed to give a set of tires to two different Late Model Sportsman drivers who enter the May 25th race. DLR is the distributor of American Racing Tires throughout New England including Wiscasset Raceway. Track race director Derek Mingo announced the deal recently and stated that all teams showing up for the day of the Coastal 200 will be eligible for the drawing. "Teams will buy their tires as they usually do and then at a manditory pre-race drivers meeting the drawing will be held for tires. Drivers must be present at the meeting to win. The two teams chosen as the winners will be given their money back for a set of four tires they bought." Mingo also announced that although there is no racing scheduled for the day before the Coastal 200, there will be a practice session Saturday May 24th from noon to 5:00pm. Any LMS teams purchasing tires Saturday will have them impounded at the track for Sunday's race. The Coastal 200 has established itself as one of the premier racing events on the northern New England racing schedule. In 2007 DJ Shaw of Center Conway, NH outdueled Mike Rowe for the big payoff.  For more information on the free tires from Dave Lind Racing, teams can call the Wiscasset Raceway offiice at (207) 632-7322 or Derek Mingo at (207) 636-6383.

Cheerleaders Looking Grand, Thanks to Raceway Owner

Barbara Martin  -  Staff Reporter – Wiscasset News

A kind of hush may have fallen over the Wiscasset Raceway during the snowy winter season, but owner Doug White has found a way to keep the cheers alive all year.

Wiscasset High School Assistant Principal and Athletic Director Matt Carlson said White walked into his office at Wiscasset High School last August with a question, and an offer any school administrator would love to hear. "What do you need?" White asked. Carlson said White offered to make a donation to any of the athletic programs at the school that could use a little community support. With educational money belts tightening all over the state, accepting the offer was a no-brainer; the only question was where to start. "Over the past two years, the uniform replacement account was cut by $10,500," Carlson said, with no money in the budget for that purpose for this school year. "Cheerleading Coach Kim Dodge and the All Sports Booster Club have been working to raise money for new cheerleading uniforms and this donation put us over the top," Carlson said. The school has only one set of benches on the upper athletic field that have to be moved when there are tennis competitions and events at other fields. It was clear that dreams of a new set of benches started dancing in Carlson's head as well. Willing to put his money where his mouth was, White donated over $1,200 to the school's athletic program, making the purchase of a new set of benches and uniforms possible. White was the former co-owner of DNK Select Used Cars in Farmingdale. He had planned to go into semi-retirement, but the lure of owning his own racetrack was just irresistible. It was a dream come true, and my wife Becky and I are very excited about it," White said. "We are here to stay and have always believed in supporting local school athletics. Those kids are our future." White said that he plans to be involved with all the schools next year, hoping to help the middle and elementary programs. "One of our other projects is to work with businesses in the area," White added. "We have several major racing events planned for next year that will bring between 5,000 and 15,000 visitors to the area. We like to have a good relationship with people in the hospitality industry so that we can refer guests to them." White said he has talked with Town Manager Arthur Faucher and believes that the draw of the raceway will help stimulate the local economy. Although he is now vacationing on a beach in Florida, snowstorms aside, he's already begun revving his engines in anticipation of the start of the next season at the raceway. In the meantime, Wiscasset High School cheerleaders are loving their new, fashionable look and cheering for the folks who made it possible. And, whoever had the chore of lugging the benches from field to field last year will be rooting for the Wiscasset Raceway all year long.

Dave Farrington, Jr. of Jay Maine will be competing in the Pro Stock division at Wiscasset Raceway in 2008.  Dave has been racing karts for 9 years and has quite a legitimate resume. 276 career wins and 21 championships. He is the all time feature winner at Oxford.  Dave will be stepping up to a full size car this year at the age of 16.  He will be driving a #23 dodge dale shaw race chassis.

NORTHEAST MOTORSPORTS EXPO: White moving forward

By TRAVIS BARRETT Staff Writer Kennebec Journal & Morning Sentinel01/07/2008

AUGUSTA -- Failure, as they say, is not an option. At least not in Doug White's mind.

The Wiscasset Raceway owner is set to begin his first full season at the facility after purchasing the track last summer. Honored this weekend as the state's Promoter of the Year by the Northeast Motorsports Expo, held at the Augusta Civic Center, White is hoping to spring Wiscasset forward by reaching back into the past.

"We just want to make it an event that people want to come to," White said of attracting fans to Saturday night short-track racing. "We want to make it as good as going to Funtown for a day. With any type of industry, you have to try to create something with how you want to do it."

Not only has White brought back the Pro Stock division on a weekly basis, making Wiscasset one of only two tracks in the state with the costly division, but he's offering a $10,000 payout to that division's champion. White has four PASS North Series races on the slate this summer including the season finale, the Coastal 200 for Late Models, a "national championship" for both entry-level Strictly Stocks and Mini Stocks, a True Value Modified Series date and the USAC Ford Focus midgets.

Instead of cutting back to fight rising costs across the industry, to both track operators and race teams, White's making a full push forward. He said he wants it to be like it used to be 20 years ago -- with big purses for racers and plenty of variety to interest teams and fans alike.

"I just like to attack something," said White, who will pay Pro Stock drivers $1,500 for a 50-lap feature win in 2008. "I prefer to see things grow, and I try and make it happen. . . . I wanted to do something that tracks used to do and pay (bigger purses). I wanted to make it go back to what I thought were more traditional payouts."

White is also aware that people will be keeping a close eye on his car counts and the way in which the track is run as the season moves along. He said it's up to him to make sure sponsors, teams and fans all get what they're being promised.

"I think we can work all these things together," White said. "Already the transition for me taking over the track has been unbelievable.

"I look at it like every year I have to succeed. I've never been the type of person that looks at failure positively."

WISCASSET RACEWAY PRESS RELEASE 9/18/07

WISCASSET RACEWAY WRAPS UP 2007 SEASON WITH RAIN, RACES, AND AWARDS

by Ken Minott
Race Correspondent  for complete story click HERE

Wiscasset Raceway put an end to the 2007 racing season with a full card of racing Saturday afternoon and then trophies handed out to the top ten in each of seven weekly racing series divisions. The program was scheduled to roll off at noon, but the Saturday morning rain that skirted the east coast of New England pushed the start back to 4:30pm once the track drying and practice sessions were complete. As a result, track owner / promoter Doug White elected to run features only in the ten divisions scheduled to race. Most division championships had been wrapped up prior to the start of the show, but the Mini Stock and Prostock titles would need to be determined in the final race of the year.

Edgecomb's Charlie Colby took the win in the 30 lap feature for the
Clark Car Crushing Prostocks, but the title would go to Scott Moore of Anson. He turned in 5 top 5's in 7 races this season, highlighted by a season best 3rd three times. It was Moore's first career title. Chuck Colby joined his father and Moore in victory lane following Saturday's race.

The 30 lap feature for the
Smith Construction Late Models was won by Wiscasset's Kevin Sherman. It was his division high 3rd win of the season and wrapped up the Rookie of the Year and runner-up point honors. Sherman out-dueled Boothbay's Steve Reny for the win. Behind them rookie Nick Hinkley outraced Chris Thorne for the 3rd place trophy. Hinkley had jumped up from the teen division midway through the season and picked up a Late Model trophy in just his 6th race. The Late Model Championship was won by Sidney's Chris Thorne, who held the point lead from opening day. For Thorne, a 2005 Super Sportsman champ at Unity Raceway, it was his first Wiscasset title. For the 2007 season, he picked up 13 top five's and 2 feature wins.

The 25 lap Super Street feature was won by Appleton's Will Collins. The 2005 champ continued his late season roll with his 4th win of the season and 3rd win in the final 4 weeks. Collins was joined in victory lane by defending champ Adam Chadbourne and Mac Hannan Jr. Veteran racer Bernie Dinsmore limped to a last place finish in the feature but it was good enough to secure his first career championship in his long career. He wrapped up the year with 11 top 5's and 2 feature wins, plus a division high 5 heat wins.

Chelsea's Maurice Young officially put his name at the top of the Wiscasset record books with his 6th career track title. Young finished 2nd in the 20 lap Strictly feature to former champ Mike Moody, but he mearly needed to take the green flag to secure the championship. The title breaks his tie with 5-time Prostock champ Scott Chubbuck for most career championships. He finished 2007 with a career best season; 17 top 5's and 7 feature wins. Two of those wins included dominant runs in both Strictly Street 75 lap main events in which he led 145 out of 150 laps. Bobby Mesimer of Woolwich joined Moody and Young in victory lane and finished as the division runner-up.

The Stock Mini division came down to a last race battle between point leader Kevin Douglass of Sidney and defending champ Shawn Kimball of Pittston. While Douglass held a large point lead over Kimball, he had missed opening day so he had one less race to go into the track's season ending championship multiplier. So, the championship came down to which driver finished ahead of the other. Douglass started back in the pack, passed Kimball near the midpoint of the race and went on to win the 20 lap feature and the title. To make him earn it, Kimball chased Douglass across the line for 2nd in the race and 2nd in the division by just 10 points. Douglass wrapped up the year with 18 top 5's and 9 feature wins.

Chelsea's Marje Albert successfully defended her Ladies Division with another dominant season. She won to 10 lap feature to finish the season with 21 top 5's and 8 feature wins. She was the only driver at Wiscasset to finish in the top five in all 21 races this season. Marje's daughter Kayla Albert picked up the runnerup trophy for the ladies class and the 3rd place trophy for the Teen Division, making her the only driver to pick up a top ten trophy in two seperate divisions.

Tyler Tibbetts of Montville won his 4th straight Teen Division feature, giving him a track-high 11 wins this season. However, Cody Sleeper of Chelsea picked up the Teen Division championship with 17 top 5's and a feature win.

Other winners on Saturday's program included Don Giggey of Unity in the shortened 6 lap Truck race; Steve Rackliff of Starks in the 15 lap Sport 4 exebition feature; and Bob Weymouth of Topsham in the 20 lap NELCAR Legend feature. Wiscasset Raceway is in the process of planning the upcoming 2008 season.
